Many patients with impotence will feel that they are always unable to achieve an erection quickly, despite their efforts, meaning they are indifferent. In fact, it's the same as blowing up a balloon – the balloon must be filled with air in order to inflate, and the opening of the balloon cannot be blocked, so that the balloon can be inflated and become full. It's the same for patients with impotence. Qi needs to be full in order to engage in sexual intercourse. Blood is the mother of Qi, and Qi is the commander of blood. Blood is guided by Qi to circulate. If Qi is insufficient, blood will stagnate, leading to a deficiency of Qi and blood stasis, resulting in impotence.

For Qi deficiency and blood stasis, Qi deficiency is the essence, and blood stasis is the consequence. The reason is as follows: "Huangdi Nei Jing" states that impotence is nothing more than two reasons: one is overexertion, and the other is malevolent heat. False work refers to the loss of kidney essence caused by excessive sexual intercourse, masturbation, sperm injuries, and weakness of the Mingmen fire, leading to impotence. Long-term illness will harm the Yang, with the spleen and Yang injured. The spleen and stomach are the foundation of life, the source of Qi and blood production. Insufficient production of Qi and blood will result in insufficient nourishment to the urogenital area. Therefore, Qi deficiency is a major cause of impotence. Therefore, treating Yangming alone is the foundation of impotence treatment, and Yangming refers to the Qi of the spleen and stomach.

Blood stasis refers to blood stasis in the liver, causing the blood to be unable to reach the penis, leading to impotence. The liver jueyin foot meridian circulates in the genital organ. The penis is based on the "Zong Jin" (branches of the meridian), and Zong Jin is in the territory of the liver. The liver sends sealed blood to Zong Jin, ensuring that the blood supply to the penis is sufficient and therefore full. Therefore, blood stasis is the ultimate cause of impotence.

What is the relationship between Qi deficiency and blood stasis, and how do they interact with each other? The first is that long-term illness can weaken Qi, and long-term illness can cause blood stasis. Qi deficiency can also lead to blood stasis, resulting in a lack of power. Qi deficiency can contribute to blood weakness, which affects the blood supply to the penis. Blood stasis can also lead to Qi deficiency, as the blood does not flow properly, thus affecting the circulation of Qi in the body, disrupting the distribution of essence. New blood does not reach the penis, while old blood does not flow out, resulting in impotence. Therefore, the fundamental way to treat impotence is to replenish Qi and mobilize blood. Adequate Qi can nourish the blood and tissues, while sufficient blood flow can relax the liver meridians, unblock the vessels, continuously nourish and supply Qi and blood, and ultimately cure impotence.

Clinical case:

Patient W.E., a 46-year-old man. The patient is married but has been unable to have a satisfactory sex life for several years. Most of the time, he cannot achieve an erection. With an injection prescribed by his urologist, he can have intercourse, but with poor quality. During the consultation, it was observed that his left and right pulses were weak. The left pulse indicates liver weakness, and the right pulse indicates Qi weakness. The tongue showed slight edema and tooth compression marks, indicating weakness in the spleen and stomach, among other signs. The patient was prescribed the following: 1. Stop consuming cold foods and drinks as they weaken the stomach; 2. Herbal remedies such as Yam, Cornelian Cherry, Angelica root, Astragalus, and Goji berries, among others. One week later, he successfully had a satisfying intercourse with his wife. He continued taking the modified prescriptions for another 3 weeks, and he completely recovered, no longer requiring injections.
